Hitachi Seaside Park: Mesmerizing Floral Fantasy in Japan for All the Nature Lover
The Hitachi Seaside Park is a beautiful spacious park of blooming flowers located on the Pacific Ocean side of the Japanese coast in the city of Hitachinaka near Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture, which features a variety of green spaces and seasonal flowers including the Nemophila and the Kochia that are spread across a field of 350 hectares.
Field of Flowers:
Apart from being a beautiful field of flowers, it is also an amusement park and serves as a cycling and walking trails. The beauty of the park has left many tourists spellbound with its colorful flowers. Millions of unbelievable seasonal flowers make the park a perfect landscape. Travelers from all over the world flock towards this area to witness this jaw-dropping park blue Nemophilia and the vivid crimson Kochia bushes in fall. For in-between, there are gardens filled with million daffodils, 170 varieties of tulips and cosmos, lily and lavender, zinnia flowers, and rapeseed to stroll among. The blooming nemophila with the contrasting blue sky and ocean from atop Miharashi Hill is ethereal and otherworldly. Nemophila is also Baby Blue Eyes as it takes after the color of the sky when in full bloom which is at their peaks from late April to mid-May.
After they blossom, they become pale, which is a peculiar feature of the flower, so the best time to see them is at the beginning of their blooming season. The park remains a hotspot place in fall because of its iconic Kochia which gives a feel of a fluffy carpet. It is also known as the Broom Grass since the plant is used to make brooms. These plants are planted in summer and as the fall approaches it grows wilder and woollier.
They can be seen in September to mid-October carpeting the park's ground from green to vivid crimson red when the weather becomes colder. Miharashi Hill offers an excellent view of the crimson Kochia brushes, along with the two million cosmoses nearby, which bloom with brilliant white, pink, and red flowers. The trails through the hills provide a perfect view of the Pacific Ocean and the rest of the park. The park can be best enjoyed during the Autumn season when the park is decorated with autumnal colors, which is from early to mid-October.
The Suisen garden, a vast forested area, marks the entrance of the park. The garden comprises of narcissus that blooms from mid-March, while across the lake, tulips bloom around April.
Attractions of the Park:
Though the flowers are a seasonal delight, the park can be enjoyed all year. There are numerous trails through the extensive Hitachinaka Nature forest, while the native plants of Japan can be enjoyed in the Dune Garden. Surprisingly, even when the whole park is crowded, these areas remain relatively quiet and peaceful. The park also has a Pleasure garden where a small amusement park is located. This park consists of 25 rides and attractions including a giant wheel, putter golf, a BMX course, and a roller coaster among others. While some of the rides are free, most of them require an extra fee.
Various restaurants are scattered throughout the park. Hence, guests need not worry about wandering the park hungry. A BBQ area is also available for picnics and entertainment.
Enroute Hitachi Park:
The park is vast in size, and hence there are two ways to explore the park. Rental bicycles are available, while small trains are also convenient to explore the park. Since there are numerous cycling paths, 11 km to be exact, it is straightforward to get by through cycling. These cycling paths are constructed separately from pedestrian paths. Visiting the park, especially during Autumn, is quite alluring. With the Autumn come pink and purple cosmos as well as Bassia Scopariaa, a type of ragweed that turns bright red when the weather changes.
These flowers dominate the color palette of the park. Despite the park's peaceful appearance, the park is always crowded, even during the non-seasonal days. Usually, the best time to visit the park is during the early hours of the weekdays. The green Kochia is the most desired by the photographers since they change their color from green to red during late September to early October. Two weeks after its bloom, the red Kochia turns brown and eventually die. The park also hosts the Nemophila Harmony festival in late April and the Suisen Fantasy festival from late September to early October. The park can be reached from Mito by taking JR Joban Line to Katsuta Station and then a bus directly to the park and also by infrequent direct highway buses from Tokyo Station to Hitachi Seaside Park. The park offers have a mesmerizing picturesque view as well as other attractive features such as its amusement park and cycle trails. The place is guaranteed to be the most peaceful and energetic place, especially during Autumn and Springs, the perfect season to witness the bloom and decline of the different varieties of flowers. Each season is different, and each of them has their flower specialty. Basically, it's a park of bloom and bud.
