The Scientific name of the Peepal tree is Ficus religiosa. The Peepal tree has several medicinal values. It helps in treating Asthma, eye pain, nose bleeds, jaundice, constipation, and heart diseases. It is considered as one of the most propitious trees on the earth. It is called the home of Lord Vishnu, Lord Brahma, Lord Lakshmi, and Lord Shiva. It is said that Buddha got Enlightenment under this Peepal tree (Bodhi tree).


Peepal tree is considered to be sacred by the followers of Buddhism, Jainism, and Hinduism. Lord Krishna said, "Among the trees I am Ashwattha". He died under the peepal tree and it is believed to be the beginning of Kali Yuga.



Spiritual Mythology

Peepal tree is a dry season – deciduous or semi-evergreen tree. It can grow up to 30 meters tall and can have a diameter of the trunk up to 3 meters. When there is a continuous/perceptible flow of air around this tree the leaves of this tree moves. People believe this as holy happening that Devas or gods reside on these leaves and make these leaves movement. Most of the temples have huge Peepal tree along with people worshipping around and offering water to the tree.


It is believed that those who worship the Peepal tree would be rewarded with wealth and name even they make mistakes. The red-coloured thread or red cloth is around the Peepal tree for worshipping. So, cutting down of Peepal tree is considered as inauspicious.


An individual is not allowed to go near the tree during the night because it is believed that a particular individual getting near the tree will bring home the negativity. There is a certain time of the day when going near the Peepal tree is completely prohibited in Shastras. According to Brahma Purana, Lord Vishnu is said to be hidden behind the Peepal tree when the demons had defeated all the Gods.


Evil Delusion

Some people believe that the ghosts or the unhappy souls reside on the tree and they are the reason behind the movement of leaves. It is believed that the evil spirits wander around Peepal tree, during night time and it may possess the innocent spirit of the human being passes by. Therefore people are prohibited to venture near the peepal tree during night time.


People who are fearful of ghosts also would not want to take a chance to face this for their safer side. Due to this most of the people would not wander near the Peepal. Some People prevent to cross the roads consist of Peepal trees.


Scientific Significance Behind Peepal Tree

During day time, there will be the presence of sunlight. The plant uses up Carbon dioxide and gives out oxygen. This phenomenon is called Photosynthesis. This process is quite common in all plants. But during night time plants perform the respiration process as if a human does. It breathes in Oxygen and releases Carbon dioxide. This process is also called Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM). Hence peepal tree is unique scientifically.


If a person tends to go near the peepal tree, he/she could suffer from suffocation and may lead to serious in condition, even death. Our ancestors probably know about photosynthesis and inhalation of carbon dioxide at night. Hence people were prohibited to venture out near the Peepal tree at night and the stories of ghosts were woven around the trees. This is the actual reason behind the saying "DON'T GO NEAR A PEEPAL TREE IN THE NIGHT."
